Aircel Chennai Open 2011

The first round of the Aircel Chennai Open continues on Tuesday, with a Top 10 star and three home favorites in action on Stadium court.

First is Indian teenager Yuki Bhambri against Russian qualifier Alexandre Kudryavtsev. Bhambri was a trailblazer for India on the junior circuit but can the 18-year-old make some noise in the pros? He earned his first ATP World Tour main draw victory last fall and will look for his second against the No. 159th-ranked Kudryavtsev.

Second up is top seed Tomas Berdych against Frederico Gil. Berdych was on fire in the first half of 2010 but trailed off in the second half (winning just seven of 20 matches after Wimbledon). In his first appearance in Chennai he will take on Gil, who became Portugal’s first ATP World Tour finalist at Estoril last May.

Next up is No. 3 seed Stanislas Wawrinka against Rohan Bopanna, one half of doubles stars the Indo-Pak Express (perhaps best known for reaching last year’s US Open doubles final). It will be a rematch of the pair’s first round meeting here last year, when Wawrinka dispatched the Indian in just 51 minutes.

Last up is Indian No. 1 Somdev Devvarman against Belgian qualifier David Goffin. Devvarman won gold at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games last fall, reached his first ATP World Tour final here in 2009 and will no doubt have the crowd behind him. Goffin is playing in his first ATP World Tour main draw.
